daphne caruana galizia

Maltese investigative journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia was killed in a car bombing near her home in October 2017. Through her hugely popular blog, Running Commentary, she had exposed crimes and pointed out the suspicious activities of powerful forces in Malta, including politicians and business people. For this, she received multiple death threats and attacks upon her home.

Her murderers are allegedly three men with links to the criminal underworld on the island. However, it remains unknown who was behind the assassination. Caruana Galizia’s family and supporters are continuing their fight for a full, independent, and fair investigation into her death.

Many journalists in Malta and around the world are continuing her work, such as The Daphne Project run in conjunction with the Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project: https://www.occrp.org/en/thedaphneproject/

One of Daphne Caruana Galizia’s most important investigations was based on the release of a massive trove of private information, leaked from the office of a Panamanian law firm, documenting the ways in which rich people, including politicians, hide their money. Known as the “Panama Papers”, the documents included evidence that top people in the Maltese government had established questionable business operations using shell companies.
