steve biko

Bantu Stephen Biko was the leading figure within the Black Consciousness Movement in apartheid-era South Africa.

A determined, tough, and highly intelligent fighter against white-minority rule, he was tortured to death by police officers in 1977. Aged just 30, he left behind a wife and five children - and a liberation movement in mourning.

In death, Biko became an icon of the struggle to end the racist system in South Africa.
