count bernadotte

The grandson of King Oscar II of Sweden, Folke Bernadotte (2 January 1895 – 17 September 1948) played an active role in his country’s diplomatic relations. At the end of the Second World War, working with the Red Cross, he helped to organize the rescue of thousands of people from Nazi POW and concentration camps.

He was asked by the newly-formed United Nations to broker a peace deal during the Arab-Israeli War of 1948, and he attempted to reconcile the competing interests of the British Empire, various Zionist groups, the Palestinian people, and the neighboring Arab countries.

There was one group, however, that would stop at nothing to achieve its objective in this conflict - and Count Bernadotte entered its crosshairs.
