Salvador Allende Part 2

EPISODE 1.7: SALVADOR ALLENDE PART 2

From the moment that Allende won the popular vote in 1970, powerful forces inside Chile and the United States began to plot his demise. A left wing intellectual, Allende was opposed by conservative Chileans, who saw him as a godless communist, and by the Nixon White House, which viewed him as threat to US business interests and geopolitical strategy. On September 11, 1973, Allende's opponents struck. Allende died in the ensuing coup, and with him, the democratic political process in Chile.
